My First Coral Reef Photography Journey: Discovering Hidden Worlds

The underwater world is a truly beautiful place, and in 2019, I had the chance to go on my first coral reef photography trip in the Philippines. I visited a private coral reef in Palawan, which was blown away by the colourful marine life and the amazing coral structures. With a simple underwater camera and heaps of enthusiasm, I tried to capture the magic of this hidden world. My technique wasn’t perfect, but the bright blues, yellows, and pinks of the reef were like living art, untouched and thriving under the waves.

My underwater photography adventure didn’t begin there! Back in 2011, I snorkelled in Australia—a bucket-list spot for anyone who adores the ocean. The Great Barrier Reef, with its vast coral gardens and amazing variety of life, offered both challenges and chances for a budding photographer. While some photos from that trip might not be perfect, they capture memories of a truly awe-inspiring natural wonder that’s still one of the most famous marine places on the planet.

These two experiences, which happened years apart, really made me appreciate coral reefs even more. They’re such delicate ecosystems bursting with life, colour and wonder. I tried to capture these moments in time, sharing the beauty of these hidden worlds with others and hoping to spark awareness about their conservation.
